          Attraction Recommendation

Florida Keys Wild Bird Center is worth a quick stop

Add this to your list of things to do in the Florida Keys — especially for kids.

Next time you head south on the Overseas Highway for an outing in the Keys, take a few minutes to stop at MM 93.6 in Tavernier.
Wander along a boardwalk through a mangrove forest and visit the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center, a volunteer-run facility with an informal, backyard sort of feel.
The center is free, though after seeing the work being done, we wanted to stuff some dollars into the donation box on the way out. It’s open from sunrise to sunset 365 days a year, and you’re free to wander without anyone hassling or bothering you.
It’s a great place to bring kids; a stop will only take 15 or 20 minutes, unless you decide to linger.
The shady mangrove forest is sectioned off via wire caging to create enclosures for injured birds. You’ll see lots of awkward Eastern Brown Pelicans hopping around with just a stub where one wing should be. There are Great Egrets and cormorants and several varieties of owls and hawks.
Along the boardwalk are cages holding some of the grand birds that are too injured to be released– Leopold the Barred Owl, Samson and Delilah the Great Horned Owls, Casper the Barn Owl.
But the place is full of birds outside the cages, too, with pelicans, herons and egrets hanging around hoping to snatch a little food. A volunteer busy feeding the birds told us: “We have no problem with birds breaking out, our problem is preventing birds from breaking in.”

Every rail and surface is covered with small handcrafted signs marking dedications, memorials and contributions.
The paths leads down to the waterfront, where you can gaze on to a lovely view of Florida Bay and its active bird life.
Along the shore, a blind next to a wetland had a sign about how to report information on roseate spoonbills wearing tracking bands. And, as if he’d read the sign, a roseate spoonbill preened himself in the pond right there.
The center was started by a Laura Quinn, “the bird lady,” a mathemetician who moved to the Keys with her husband because they were sailors. She began rescuing and rehabilitating birds with the help of a local vet and soon her home-grown rehab facility needed more room.  She found a 5.5-acre waterfront property on which only three-quarters of an acre could be developed, and this became both her home and the bird center. She died in 2010.
Today, that property is one of the last saltwater tidal ponds in the keys and is a great place to see native trees and animals.
The non-profit that operates the sanctuary now has a modern hospital, which is not open to the public.

          Check us out!

A spectacular review on the fabulous BEACH HOUSE,

          For us, the perfect vacation..........
We fell in love with Sunset Drive the first time we stayed. My Paradise was our first choice but was already rented during the time we wanted, so we stayed elsewhere. The next time, it was available and it was perfect. Large open areas that simply melted into each other, a fabulous covered deck to read in the shade or catch some rays. A beautiful beach complete with sand bar makes walking at low tide a nature adventure. A man made jetty is a naturalist's dream - all kinds of sea creatures - parrot fish, nurse sharks (very gentle), lobsters and all varieties of fish and the curious little sting rays who swam up to us to see just what we were and then hurried off to catch a crab. We witnessed two turtle nests hatch this year and it was awesome, especially for our 9 year old grandson. The amenities of the house are well documented in other posts. It was lovely! Having lived in the keys years ago, it was perfect. We'll be back.

WHY RENT WITH KEYS HOLIDAY RENTALS?

We represent properties in the captivating Islands of the Upper Keys - Key Largo, Plantation, Tavernier, Islamorada. They are located a little over an hours' drive south, southwest of Miami, Florida. The Keys are known for their casual lifestyle, crystal clear waters, spectacular snorkeling and diving, and as the fishing capital of the world.\

Customer Satisfaction. Andi has built a reputation for client satisfaction, and she is devoted to making your rental experience a pleasant one. Finding the right property is only the beginning. She will assist during your visit in anyway she can to make sure you feel welcome and enjoy your stay. We want you to come back again and again!
Renting a Condo? Condos are ideal for one person or small families who want a community type of living where they can meet people in the common areas of the complex. Condo communities offer amenities not found in a single family home, i.e. swimming pool, hot tub, tennis court, barbecue area, tiki picnic area, beach and so on.

Renting a Single Family Home? Single family homes are ideal for family vacations. They usually offer more privacy and flexibility than a condo. Most have private dockage on canals leading to the ocean or bay and a few have swimming pools. Some residential communities offer a private beach and/or provide boat launching facilities.

Relocating to the Upper Keys? If you are relocating to the Upper Keys area we have several rental properties that are available on a long term basis. We can assist you in collecting the information you need, and make your transition as smooth as possible. If we do not have a property that fits your description and needs, we will try to find one with another agent. Please contact our office for long term renting assistance and area information.

5 Fall Dinners Where Apples Are the Star

          by Sam Worley

Pie's fine, but fall's favorite fruit can do so much more. See it stretch its wings in these five savory weeknight meals.

          MONDAY: BACK TO BASICS

Get creative later! Tonight's the night to cook up a classic German combination—sausage, sauerkraut, apples. (Come to think of it, though, this recipe does go a little off-script: it gets an extra nutritional boost from seared bok choy.)

TUESDAY: WHAT GROWS TOGETHER GOES TOGETHER

Apples—in this recipe Pink Ladies or Honeycrisps—share the same season as hearty greens like kale and Brussels sprouts. And all of that comes together in this massaged salad, which gets a salty kick from the addition of Mimolette cheese. I'd top it with a fried egg and call it dinner.

          WEDNESDAY: YOU DESERVE A BRAISE

The best part of the chicken (that'd be the thighs) are braised gently with butter, brown sugar, apples, and shallots in this warming weekday dinner, which comes together in less than an hour.

          THURSDAY: WILL YOU ROSEMARY ME?

Apples meet potatoes, fennel, and rosemary in the oven while you whip up these pork chops on the stove. If nothing else, your house will smell tremendous.

          FRIDAY: FAST, FANCY SHELLFISH

What takes only a few ingredients, comes together in a flash, and is endlessly elegant on the plate? This little seared-scallops number, the sort of thing you can make for date night—or just to celebrate making it to the end of the week.

5 Chores You Should Never Skip (Even If You're Busy)

Pressed for time? Running late? Didn't finish your Sunday morning "to clean" list but need to head out the door to brunch right now? Whenever you're pressed for time — or have an extra heavy schedule a certain week — don't let all your chores and cleaning duties slip into disarray. Keep your house functioning by being choosy with which chores you skip and which ones you tackle.

          Never skip these chores:

          1. Making the bed

Nothing makes me feel more like the in-control grown-up I hope I am than by coming back home and opening my bedroom door to a perfectly made bed. The potential benefits of this one are too great to let it slide.

          2. Doing the dishes

Dirty dishes are a horrible, exponentially growing thing. When you skip doing them and instead grabbing a clean dish to do your bidding, you've basically doubled the amount of work you've got to do when you clean them next time. Try and get in the habit of cleaning dishes as you use them so there's never a mountain that needs climbing cleaning.

          3. Picking up dirty laundry

We think it's OK to occasionally skip over the dirty laundry in your hamper when you're pressed for time, but don't skip your routine of filling the hamper. Dirty towels and recently worn outfits strewn about will make a room feel dirtier than it actually is.

          4. Quick countertop swipes

Whatever method you use to clean your countertop (from convenient wipes to DIY natural cleaners and microfiber rags), consider always applying a simple swipe after you're done using an area. It'll help keep stains from getting hard and a little shine will go a long way to making a room feel clean.

          5. Vacuuming common areas

From hard surfaces to carpet and rugs, a cleaner floor instantly equates to a cleaner room. Some might balk at vacuuming being a "quick" chore, but we think a (very inexact) once-over of your most commonly used areas is something you should try and tackle often. And you can always consider a compact handheld vacuum for even faster swipes over visibly dirty small spots.
What are your skip and never skip chore rules you live by? What's on your list of what to never skip and what's okay to miss on your busy weeks?
