FAMILY TRAVEL IN THE UPPER KEYS

By Ashley Velez, Marketing Manager at Keys Holiday Rentals

If you have a family and enjoy traveling together, perhaps you are looking for a bit of inspiration on where to head to next, or travel tips to make your lives a little bit easier.

There are so many beautiful islands in the Florida Keys that the choices can be overwhelming. I have visited nearly twenty Keys myself and I sometimes find it hard to pick just one island as the best island for families. I can say personally the Upper Keys have the most to offer for families with children ages 3-18. I guess that would be the reason my daughter, husband and I live on the gorgeous islands of the Upper Keys.
In Monroe County, the Upper Keys, are the closest to Miami. They are located on the north side of The Florida Keys. The largest section being Key Largo. It also is a major tourist area and has the reputation for having the best diving sites of the Keys. It shares a section of the Everglades National Park and South of Key Largo is Islamorada, the "fisherman town."
  • Key Largo.
  • Tavernier.
  • Plantation Key.
  • Windley Key.
  • Islamorada - The Village of Islands and Sport Fishing Capital of the World (the group of islands on this Key are Plantation, Upper Matecumbe Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Indian and Lightnumvitae Key.

The best part of staying in the Upper Keys is the option to travel South for the day! I truly haven’t been to an island in the Keys that I disliked. You are sure to find something on every island that will appeal to you and your family.

ACTIVITIES:     What I love about the Upper Keys is the amount of variety. We as a family love the crystal clear waters that surround our gorgeous islands but we also like different types of attractions and this is the main reason that the Upper Keys is my favorite of our Islands for your next family vacation to the Florida Keys!

You can take a number of AWESOME snorkel trips right out of John Pennekamp State Park where you’ll see some of the most colorful reefs and tremendous marine life. As you travel South be sure to stop at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Sanctuary to see the various species of birds. Here they will educate the public about the dangers facing our wildlife and the steps we can all take to protect the environment. You may also want to reserve kayaks are PADDLE the Keys in Tavernier. The Tavernier Creek has at least a couple dozen mangrove holes where you can find beautiful wildlife including manatees. Don’t forget to plan your day at Theater of the Sea in Islamorada, a marine mammal park where you can enjoy an up close and personal dolphin, sea lion, and parrot show, a bottomless boat ride, a lagoon-side beach, and a guided marine life tour with tropical fish, sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, alligators, and crocodiles.

You may also want to book a fishing charter out of Whale Harbor Marina or Bud & Mary’s Marina! We recommend a number of fishing captains who our guests highly recommend. Here are just a few:

                   SeaHorse Charters
         Blue Chip Too Charters
         Buzz On Fishing Charters
         Reel Sharp Sportfishing
         Robbie’s of Islamorada

The activities are endless from the Glass Bottom Boat, a Sunset Cruise to Feeding the Hungry Tarpon at Robbies! You are sure to find a plethora of activities the whole family will enjoy!

ACCOMODATIONS:      Single family homes are ideal for family vacations. They usually offer more privacy and flexibility than a condo. Most have private dockage on the open water or canals leading to the ocean or bay… a few of them also have swimming pools. Some residential communities even offer a private beach and/or provide boat launching facilities.

Condos are ideal for one person or small families who want a community type of living where they can meet people in the common areas of the complex. Condo communities offer amenities not found in a single family home, i.e. swimming pool, hot tub, tennis court, barbecue area, tiki picnic area, beach and so on.
